Northamptonshire Youth Offending Service

In 2018 Northamptonshire Youth Offending Service (NYOS) completed a review of our work with young people regarding the carrying of weapons to ensure that current practice was up-to-date and evidence led.

We developed an intervention package for young people that could be delivered in schools and the Youth Offending Service.  We also liaised with the Youth Justice Board in relation to this programme and it is currently going through the process of being accredited by ASDAN.

The delivery of this programme is based on a tiered approach to ensure that all young people receive the most appropriate level of intervention/information.  The Stages of Knife Crime programme is as follows:

is our logo for this programme which was developed and designed by a young person.  Our ethos has very much been to engage with our young people both in the community and custody as they live with these challenges on a sometimes daily basis and are best place to give us feedback on the interventions we will be delivering.  So far the feedback has been extremely positive.

Most importantly we have developed this programme using a variety of different delivery types including school assemblies and groupwork, videos, interactive resources, quizzes, leaflets and presentations – all designed to provoke discussion using a variety of different media.

NYOS launched our Knives ends lives intervention programme at the Northamptonshire Safeguarding Children’s partnership (NSCP) annual conference on 26th September 2019 and presented some of the interventions to highlight the work we have been doing.   We provided all agencies present with the tools and resources, allowing the learning to be rolled out and to ensure delivery across the wider partnership to all young people in a variety of settings. These resources are available here:
